The most important thing you must do as a caregiver is take care of yourself first! Have you ever heard a flight attendant’s instructions in the event of the oxygen masks falling from overhead? Passengers are instructed to first put the masks over their own faces and to take several breaths before then placing the masks on the faces of any children, babies or invalids with whom they are traveling. This is because you cannot take care of someone else if you are not okay!  Don’t ignore your own needs because you’re taking care of someone else.

• Eat a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein.


• Walk for at least 30 minutes a day, every day. No excuses!


• Get a full night’s sleep every night. If you’re frequently up during the night caring for your loved one, nap during the day when he or she naps.


• Stay in contact with your own doctor. Let her know that you are caring for someone who has cancer. She can advise you on other ways to take care of yourself.


• Ask for help! You need to take a break now and then. That’s what friends and family are for. If you don’t have someone who can offer you some respite, ask your loved one’s treatment team. They can often direct you to professional respite caregivers.
